Idaho-Bound

We have been couting down the days... now hours... until we leave for Idaho!  We are heading straight up to McCall, Idaho once we land for a 5 day day camping trip with the Vander Stelt family!

It will also be Sam's first camping trip so we are curious to see how that goes.... hopefully Sam doesn't wake up the campground in the middle of the night demanding too many bottles.  He will love being around all the activity and all his cousins and third cousins!

One thing that will be very special - Sam's Great Grandpa and Grandma Vander Stelt will be coming up to McCall and they are excited.  This is the last big trip for them and they will put their motorhome up for sale after this trip.  I have so many amazing memories of camping with my Grandpa and Grandma Vander Stelt - camping trips always included the motorhome, being spoiled by Grandma with real hot cocoa and cookies, fishing in the mornings, waterskiing and swimming in the afternoon, and campfires at night.  I have great memories of salmon fishing trips in Canada, family camping trips at Owhyee Lake, and smaller trips to Brownlee lake.  My grandparents would also take turns bringing several grandchildren with them on trips without our parents - very brave but very fun!!  I have so many great memories with my grandparents and all the fun camping and fishing trips and I hope Sam and all my kids get to experience the same things I did with their grandparents!

Entertainment for Sam (or MOM.. hmmm?!?!)

Yesterday was SO HOT AND HUMID, we couldn't even go or be outside!!!  Sam and I had fun playing, but were a little restless (dad had school all weekend).  So, I tested out a new form of entertainment for Sam - he seemed to enjoy!  Next best thing to a puppy.....  they do make a good team as one is notorious for making messes and one cleans it up!

This time he wasn't quite as sure!

What's New

Things about Sam.....

1. PLAYTIME - He loves playing in water - whether that is bathtime, water play at daycare, or even a glass of ice water - Sam get's excited.  The daycare ladies told us that he was one of the only babies that loved playing in the water and didn't mind getting splashed!

So, when it gets hot, I have let Sam play on the balcony with a pan of water, which he loves.... not sure about the neighbors below us.....

 2.  MEALTIMES - Meals require a lot of patience at our house!!!!  Sam loves to eat, but the finger foods we try to start each meal with are more of a game to Sam than an appetizer!  I don't think a single noodle from the mac n cheese made it in his mouth, but he loved throwing every piece out of the bowl!

Foods we have been trying to give Sam are Little wheels, Puffs, teething biscuits, blueberries, crackers, bread, mashed potatoes, etc...  He sometimes gets a few bites in, but very few!

The other challenges are that he is constantly distracted and trying to grab anything in reach so the area must be cleared before dinner.

He still likes to rock his high chair.....

And...mom's least favorite, he lunges at the spoon and swats at it which can cause quite a mess.

Often, at the end of the meal, i just let him go hog wild with the food, spoon, and whatever - let him make a mess and then throw him in the bathtub!

3.  SLEEPING -  Sleeping has been going better after tough love and a good night is Sam going down at 7pm - waking up between 4 and 5 am for a bottle and then up at 7am.  That's a good night which happens a fair amount...  The other nights are anything goes!!!   The biggest challenge with bedtime the last couple weeks is that when Sam doesn't want to go to bed, he now rolls on his stomach and often gets stuck or wedged in weird positions.  It can get a little frustrating having to continually get him unstuck or re-situated.

 4.  FAVORITE THINGS -

Sam still loves his scooter and Zooms all over the house in it.  He can reverse, 3 point turn, and maneuver quite well.  If he hears the refrigerator or dishwasher open, he can zoom over in just a few seconds!  He loves to play with stuff in the fridge door and the dishes he can reach in the dishwasher.  To the left is Sam helping dad unload the dishwasher - he hates to miss any action!!!

Sam also loves his activity table, balls, and any container, cupboard or shelf he can reach and pull stuff out of.
Sam is very active and we have to keep a pretty close eye on him!  One of my favorite things is when he smiles big, with a wrinkled nose and his two bottom teeth - it is so cute.

No Gopher fans in this house - BOISE BRONCOS all the way for Sam

5.  SAM'S FRIEND - One of Sam's friends is Isaiah Kron - they see each other at Bible study and sometimes on the weeknds!  This last weekend was REALLY hot so Sam and Isaiah met to play in the community kiddie pool near Isaiah's house for an hour - they had SO MUCH FUN!  We will definitely be back there!

We are having a great summer, and much to look forward to - Sam will only be an only child for about 28 more weeks - I'm excited to see what he will be like as a big brother!!!  Let the LOVE and CRAZINESS in the Backstrom house keep growing!!!!!!

Summertime Cutie!

Sam's ADORABLE outfit from Auntie Mary Clark - SO CUTE!!

Beating the Heat at Daycare!!!

Yesterday, according to the news, the temperature was at a heat index of 107 DEGREES!  It was a hot and humid day, for sure!  Sam and his friends beat the heat with some water play at daycare - pretty cute!!!!

Sam is in the middle row on the right - the cutest one in his mom's opinion!
